About SBHCA

Steeped in history and brimming with character, the Barton Heights neighborhood was originally developed by James H. Barton, making history in 1894 as one of Richmond’s very first electric trolley suburbs. Today, a stroll down its tree-lined streets reveals a stunning architectural tapestry of Queen Anne and Colonial Revival homes, each echoing the area's rich heritage.

Propelled by a passionate community spirit, the Southern Barton Heights Community Association (SBHCA) was formed in the 1990s, uniting residents, local business owners, and developers in a shared vision of renewal. Thanks to a landmark 1995 revitalization plan, the neighborhood successfully restored its historic homes to their authentic glory and breathed new life into the Rose Avenue corridor.

Now a proud part of Richmond’s 6th District, Barton Heights seamlessly blends historic charm with modern convenience. Featuring beautiful parks, tennis courts, a family pool, and the vibrant shops and restaurants of Brookland Park Boulevard, this distinct neighborhood offers a peaceful, welcoming retreat—all just a 15-minute commute from the heart of downtown.
